Thank you so much to those of you who attended Curriculum Night. It will take all of us working together this year to ensure that each of your children has a successful year, so we appreciate you coming in to learn about your child’s school year.
Reading – Students are reading narratives to learn how a story unfolds naturally. They are also learning how the narrator/characters use dialogue, actions, thoughts, and feelings to develop experiences and events that tell the story. We are reading aloud the story Because of Winn-Dixie and students are answering questions about the content as we read. Students have taken notes on each chapter. They may be having a quiz soon. Grammar – We will be working on using plural nouns correctly in our writing. Writing – We are reading informational articles and using the TEACH method to write a constructive one paragraph response to each article. Science – We are focusing on both physical and behavioral traits and adaptations that help plants and animals thrive in their regions of Georgia. There will be a quiz soon. Please talk to your children frequently about being 100% accountable each day. Students need to come to class ready to learn with all necessary supplies (pencil pouch with supplies in it, purple CJ, and agenda), ready to be responsible, and ready to be respectful. Please remember the tardy bell rings at 7:40 and students are expected to be in their seats prepared and ready for the day prior to that time. I am looking forward to welcoming all of you to Curriculum Night on Tuesday August 21 at 6:30 in room 312. You will have an opportunity to learn about the third-grade curriculum, grading, homework expectations, etc. This event is for parents only. You will also have an opportunity to meet your child’s math teacher. Please make sure to ask your child the name of his/her math teacher so that you will know where to go after leaving my room. Please remember that this evening is for all parents and is not a time to discuss your individual child. Conference times will be set up later in the fall.

Dates to Remember: Curriculum Night: Tuesday August 21, 6:30-8:00 School Store: Wednesday August 22 Fall Picture Day: Wednesday August 29 Have a wonderful week. Welcome to Dolvin! We are delighted to be working with your children this year!
The first week of school was spent getting acquainted and practicing routines and procedures. We practiced our school-wide drills and learned what is expected of all students in the classroom, bathroom, hallway, and cafeteria. We will continue to work on these expectations throughout the year and will need your help to continuously reinforce these good habits. Math: Please check your child's math teacher's website for her math newsletter. Reading: In reading, we will begin our literary standards by reading stories and learning about characters and their traits and settings in stories. Writing: Students will begin learning how to answer questions in a paragraph form (constructed response). We will introduce students to the TEACH method in writing. TEACH stands for Topic Sentence, Evidence from the text, Add your own thoughts and feelings based on the evidence, Conclude your writing with a solid ending or conclusion, Have another look at what you wrote and check for correct spelling, capitalization, and punctuation. We will practice the TEACH method with narrative writing. Science and Social Studies: Science and Social Studies will be alternated about every three weeks. We are starting with science and a unit on the habitats, plants, and animals of Georgia.
