Reading- This week, we will review identifying the author’s point of view, text features and the main idea of nonfiction texts. We will also identify our own point of view. We will do some fun winter themed activities this week as well. There will be no homework this week. Grammar- This week, we will review what we have learned about reference materials, verb tenses and types of sentences. Spelling –There will be no spelling sort this week. A new sort will be sent home after the break. Writing- This week, we will continue working on informative writing. Informational writing will include 5 paragraphs: an introduction to the topic, 3 paragraphs explaining the 3 big ideas or subtopics that support their main topic, and a conclusion. Students will also include facts, definitions and transition words in their writing. Science: We will review what we have learned about weather, erosion, rocks and minerals. Spelling –Students will concentrate on Sort 18 this week. Our spelling quiz on these three sorts will be on Friday, December 14th. Writing- This week, we will continue working on informative writing. Students will explain how water and wind can affect rocks and soil through weathering and erosion. We will also be learning about the different types of soil, their ability to hold water and the size of their grains. We will have a science test on Tuesday, December 11th. This grammar test will include verb tenses (past: ed to end of words, present: sometimes adds s to the end of words, future: adds will before the verb), irregular verbs, reference materials, and types of sentences. Examples include: declarative- gives a statement (ends in a period) interrogative- asks a question (ends in a question mark) exclamatory- shows a lot of feeling (ends in an exclamation point) imperative- gives a command (ends in a period or exclamation point) Spelling –Students will concentrate on Sort 17 this week.
