I hope you enjoyed the weekend! Spelling- We are working on sorts 28, 29 and 30 in spelling. We will focus on sort 30 this week. On March 29, a spelling quiz will be given on 20 words from the 3 different lists. Reading- This week, we will continue to touch on fables, folktales, and myths but also start reviewing our reading skills from the year in preparation of GA Milestones. Writing- We will continue to work on opinion writing while also beginning to review constructed responses, narrative writing and informational writing in preparation of GA Milestones. Grammar- We will continue working on subordinating conjunctions. A subordinating conjunction is used to link a subordinate clause (also known as a dependent clause) to the main clause (also known as an independent clause). An example is, Keep your hand on the wound until the nurse tells you to take it off. Science - We will continue our final science unit on Heat. Students will be learning about sources of heat energy, carrying out experiments using different tools including thermometers, and understanding that heat transfers from hotter to colder areas until the temperatures even out. We will have a test on Thursday, March 28th. Milestones- There are several wonderful resources available to help your child prepare for the Milestones assessment in April. Students are reading two articles about the same topic written from two different points of view. Students are then forming their own opinion about the topic using evidence from the articles to support their own point of view. Grammar- We will continue reviewing compound sentences using coordinating conjunctions (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so). We will be introducing subordinating conjunctions. Homework- There will be no homework this week since we earned a no homework pass for all of our Boosterthon pledges. Please send back sign and return papers if you have not already done so. Students are learning to use similes, metaphors, hyperbole, idioms, onomatopoeia, oxymoron, personification and alliteration. This week, we will be looking at songs that use figurative language and determining the meaning of figurative language. This is a great way for our children to see figurative language in something with which they are familiar. Writing- We will continue to work on opinion writing. Students are studying the National, State, and Local Governments, how they are organized, who leads each branch, and the responsibilities of each branch. We have learned what it means to be responsible citizens and why it is so important to respect one another. We will be completing our unit on Democracy and taking an assessment on Friday, March 8th.
