Spelling- Sorts 25, 26, 27. Focus on sort 26 this week. The spelling quiz on this unit will be given March 8.
Reading- We are learning the usage of literal vs. non-literal language with figurative language. Students are learning to use similes, metaphors, oxymoron, hyperbole, idioms, onomatopoeia, personification, and alliteration. They are also learning what figurative language means. Writing- We will continue to work on opinion writing. Students are reading two articles about the same topic written from two different points of view. Students are then forming their own opinion about the topic using evidence from the articles to support their own point of view. Grammar- Students will have a grammar test on Tuesday, February 26th on commas and quotations, comparative and superlative adjectives and adverbs, prefixes and suffixes. Later in the week, students will learn about subject/verb agreement and pronoun/antecedent agreement.
Social Studies – In our current unit on the American Government, students are studying the national, state, and local governments, how they are organized, who leads each branch, and the responsibilities of each branch. We have learned what it means to be responsible citizens and why it is so important to respect one another. Coach Digital: As many of you know, we take Milestones in April. An example of a simile is “as big as an elephant.” An example of a metaphor is, “Your brain is a computer.” Writing- We will continue to work on opinion writing. Students are reading two articles about the same topic written from two different points of view. Students are then forming their own opinion about the topic using evidence from the articles to support their own opinion. Grammar- This week we will be reviewing commas and quotation marks in dialogue, comparative and superlative adjectives, and prefixes, suffixes, and roots. Students will take a test covering each of these next week (February 25- March 1).

I hope you had a wonderful weekend! Spelling- Sorts 22, 23, 24. Focus on sort 24 this week. The spelling quiz will be on February 14th. Please note that this is one day earlier than normal due to the holiday on the 15th. Reading- This week, we will continue comparing two stories written by the same author, topic, or characters. The goal is for students to compare and contrast the themes, settings, and plots of the stories. On Thursday, February 14th, students will have a reading test on text structures (compare and contrast, sequence/chronological order, problem and solution, description/main idea and cause and effect) and comparing the themes, plots, settings, and characters of two stories by the same author. Writing- We will continue to work on opinion writing. Students are learning to write opinion pieces on topics or texts. Students are learning that opinion writing includes a point of view supported with evidence from the readings. They are learning to introduce the topic or book they are writing about, state an opinion, and create an organizational structure that lists reasons. Students are using linking words and phrases (e.g., because, therefore, since, for example) to connect their opinion and reasons. They are learning to write a concluding statement or section. Grammar- Students will continue working on prefixes, suffixes, and roots. Prefixes include im, in, de, over, bio, and bi. Suffixes include tion, ful, less, ment, and able. Science – Students took the fossils test on Friday. This week, we will be doing some fun projects with fossils. Social Studies – Our next unit will be on American Government. I hope you had a fantastic weekend! Homework- There will be no homework sent home this week. Over the past few weeks our class has been working toward a goal for excellent work ethic and behavior. We reached our goal this last week. As a reward, students voted to have no homework this week. Science- We will continue to learn about fossils and will be learning about what paleontologists do. In this unit, students will learn to obtain, evaluate, and communicate information on how fossils provide evidence of past organisms. We will have a fossils test on Friday, February 8th.
