Math: This week, students will continue learning about acute, obtuse, right and straight angles. They will also learn that polygons are closed shapes with straight sides. Students will also learn how to categorize triangles by their side lengths and angles. They will categorize triangles as scalene, equilateral, isosceles, right, obtuse and acute triangles. Students will also learn about different types of quadrilaterals (rhombus, trapezoid, square, rectangle and parallelogram). Students will begin to identify shapes by how many vertices, the types of angles and how many edges they have. Students will have their first quiz in math soon.
Purple Folder and Agenda: I will ask students to bring their purple folder and agenda home each night. The agenda will tell you about upcoming quizzes and tests. The purple folder will hold our homework and graded work that will need to be signed and returned to me. Homework will be sent home on Monday and due each Friday. Multiplication Facts: Please continue to spend 5 minutes a night doing multiplication flashcards. Flashcards can be purchased at the dollar store or made on notecards. I will have students take weekly multiplication tests on the computer as well. Students can practice the tests they will take at the following padlet: https://padlet.com/watkinskr1/mult. It is my goal that students complete each of these tests within a minute and thirty seconds and get a 100%. This shows me that they have memorized them and they are no longer having to use strategies to solve the problems. Each student will have a multiplication drill sheet in his or her purple folder. You can look at these sheets to see if your child is passing off his or her multiplication tables. Have a wonderful week.

Dear Parents,
I hope you had a wonderful weekend. Math: Last week, students learned about how to find the area and perimeter of shapes. To find the area, students will need to multiply the length by width. In order to find the perimeter of shapes, students will add up the side lengths of the shape. This week, students will begin learning about acute, obtuse, right and straight angles. I hope you had a wonderful weekend. Each week, I will post an update about what your child has been learning and what they will be working on this week. http://mswatkins3rdgrade.weebly.com/ Math: Last week, we worked on our classroom expectations and the structure of our math class. We reviewed skills students had learned previously and prepared to begin our new unit of study this week. This week, students will begin learning about how to find the area and perimeter of shapes. To find the area, students will need to multiply the length by width. In order to find the perimeter of shapes, students will add up the side lengths of the shape. The link provided will give more of an explanation about what we will be studying this unit. https://www.georgiastandards.org/Georgia-Standards/Frameworks/Unit-4-3rd-grade-parent-letter.pdf Purple Folder and Agenda: I will ask students to bring their purple folder and agenda home each night. The agenda will tell you about upcoming quizzes and tests. The purple folder will hold our homework and graded work that will need to be signed and returned to me. Homework will be due each Friday. Multiplication Facts: Please begin helping your child memorize his or her multiplication facts each night. This year, students will begin doing division with much larger numbers. As a third grade team, we have found that students struggle less if they have their multiplication facts memorized. My goal is that each week, students will have a new multiplication table memorized. For instance, they will begin working on their 2’s (2x1, 2x2, 2x3 etc. up to 2x12) the first week. Then they will memorize their 3’s the next week. If you can spend 5 minutes a night doing flashcards, the students will begin to memorize them very quickly. Flashcards can be purchased at the dollar store or made on notecards.
