Hello parents,
I hope you had a wonderful weekend! Spelling- Sorts 22, 23, 24. Focus on sort 24 this week. The spelling quiz will be on February 14th. Please note that this is one day earlier than normal due to the holiday on the 15th. Reading- This week, we will continue comparing two stories written by the same author, topic, or characters. The goal is for students to compare and contrast the themes, settings, and plots of the stories. On Thursday, February 14th, students will have a reading test on text structures (compare and contrast, sequence/chronological order, problem and solution, description/main idea and cause and effect) and comparing the themes, plots, settings, and characters of two stories by the same author. Writing- We will continue to work on opinion writing. Students are learning to write opinion pieces on topics or texts. Students are learning that opinion writing includes a point of view supported with evidence from the readings. They are learning to introduce the topic or book they are writing about, state an opinion, and create an organizational structure that lists reasons. Students are using linking words and phrases (e.g., because, therefore, since, for example) to connect their opinion and reasons. They are learning to write a concluding statement or section. Grammar- Students will continue working on prefixes, suffixes, and roots. Prefixes include im, in, de, over, bio, and bi. Suffixes include tion, ful, less, ment, and able. Science – Students took the fossils test on Friday. This week, we will be doing some fun projects with fossils. Social Studies – Our next unit will be on American Government.
