Hello parents,
I hope you had a fantastic weekend! Homework- There will be no homework sent home this week. Over the past few weeks our class has been working toward a goal for excellent work ethic and behavior. We reached our goal this last week. As a reward, students voted to have no homework this week. While there is no homework, we will have a grammar quiz and a fossils test this week, so please still encourage your child to study. Spelling- Sorts 22, 23, 24. Focus on sort 23 this week. Students will have a spelling quiz on February 14th. Please note that this is one day earlier than normal due to the holiday on the 15th. Reading- This week, we will begin comparing two stories written by the same author. Students will compare and contrast the themes, settings, and plots of the stories. Writing- Students will learn to write opinion pieces on topics or texts. Their writing will include a point of view supported with evidence from the readings. They will learn to introduce the topic or book they are writing about, state an opinion, and create an organizational structure that lists reasons. Students will use linking words and phrases (e.g., because, therefore, since, for example) to connect their opinion and reasons. They will provide a concluding statement or section. Grammar- Students are learning about comparative and superlative adverbs and adjectives. In addition, students will begin learning about prefixes. We will have a grammar quiz on Thursday, February 7th. The quiz will cover comparative and superlative adjectives and adverbs. For comparative adjectives and adverbs, we add more before longer adjectives or -er to the end of shorter adjectives. For superlative adjectives and adverbs, we add most before longer adjectives or -est to the end of shorter adjectives. (Examples- comparative: bigger, more special; superlative: biggest, most special). The quiz will also cover commas and quotations in dialogue. (example: The girl said, "have a wonderful day.") Science- We will continue to learn about fossils and will be learning about what paleontologists do. In this unit, students will learn to obtain, evaluate, and communicate information on how fossils provide evidence of past organisms. We will have a fossils test on Friday, February 8th.
