Hi Parents,
I hope you had a great weekend! Please refer to the ABC Countdown to see what activities we have planned for this week! Homework –We will not have any homework this week due to our class reaching our class goals for great behavior. Please make sure to study sort 33 this week with your child. We will have a spelling quiz on Friday, May 10th over sorts 31, 32, and 33. We will also have our Economics test on Thursday, May 9th. Solar Ovens- If you signed up to bring in supplies for our solar ovens, please send them in this week. I appreciate you all pitching in to make this possible. We are going to start building our ovens on the May 13th. If you have old newspapers, please send them in. The newspaper acts as an insulator for our ovens and right now we do not have anyone signed up for newspaper. Reading- We will be reviewing folktales from before Georgia Milestones. Students will look at various folktales and discuss the moral of the story and what makes it a folktale. We will be focusing on fables and myths this week. We are also going to be sharing our poetry projects with the class this week. Writing- For the next few weeks of school, we will be continuing to review the elements and expectations for narrative, informational, and opinion writing as well as constructive responses. We will also include some creative writing with the different types of writing we’ve studied. This week, students will be researching how a newspaper is made. They will write their own newspaper, including specific parts we’ve discussed in class. We will also be working on cursive. Grammar- We will continue to work on reviewing our grammar skills from this year. Social Studies - Our final unit this year is our Economics Unit. In this unit, students will define and give examples of the four types of productive resources: natural (land), human (labor), capital (capital goods) and Entrepreneurship (risk-taking and combining natural, human, and capital resources in an attempt to make a profit). Students will also give examples of interdependence and trade and explain the benefits of voluntary exchange. ( consumers and producers). In addition, students also will be working on describing how goods and services are allocated by price in the marketplace and explain that some goods are made locally, and some elsewhere in the country, and some in other countries. Finally, students will explain the concept of opportunity cost as it relates to making a saving or spending choice. Students will begin brainstorming for their business project (what business they would like to open, what resources they would need). We will have our Economics test on Thursday, May 9th. Upcoming dates and reminders: May 8th- Book Fair (we will be attending the book fair this day at 11:00 am. Please have your child bring money for this if they would like to buy a book).
