Reading- This week students will begin working on finding text features in nonfiction texts. We will be going over; titles, headings, timelines, table of contents, photographs, subheadings, captions, diagrams, labels, charts, tables, maps, bold/ highlighted/ italic words, textbox/ sidebars, bullets, glossaries, and indexes. We will not have homework this week as students will have ITBS (Iowa) testing. Please study sorts 10, 11, and 12 with your child since we will have a spelling quiz on October 29th.
Grammar- Students will continue working on verb tenses; past, present, and future tense as well as irregular verbs. We will introduce subject and predicate. The subject tells us who the sentence is about. The predicate tells us what is happening in the sentence. Spelling – Students will concentrate on the spelling patterns in Sort 12 this week. Our spelling quiz on these three sorts will be Monday, October 29. Writing – Students will be completing their personal narratives. Students are learning to write a strong hook to introduce the story, use transition words to connect main ideas in paragraphs, how to add more details to the story, and how to write a conclusion. We will be starting with informational writing next week. Science- We will be wrapping up our unit on pollution this week. Students will obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the effects of pollution (air, land, and water) and humans on the environment. Students will explore, research, and communicate solutions such as conservation of resources and recycling of materials to protect plants and animals. Volunteers-Thank you for all you do to help Dolvin students. However, due to the Iowa Assessments next week, Dolvin will not have any volunteers (in all grade levels) in the building until after 12:00 p.m. from Monday, October 22nd through Friday October 26th.
