I hope you all had a wonderful weekend.
Reading – This week, students will continue to identify the point of view of the narrator and compare it to their own point of view. This week we will introduce finding the main idea and supporting details. We are spending a lot of time working on finding the evidence in stories with highlighters and Post-It notes and using this evidence to help make inferences. We will continue our read-aloud of the narrative Because of Winn-Dixie. Students are nearing completion of their question packet on each chapter. In the near future, there will be a test over the entire book to assess listening comprehension. Grammar – We are continuing our study of possessive nouns this week. We will also be introducing abstract and concrete nouns. Spelling – Students have their spelling lists for Words Their Way Sort 7, 8, and 9 in the front of their purple CJ’s. This week we will concentrate on the spelling patterns in Sort 8. When studying spelling words with your child, please focus on the vowel patterns that are emphasized and help your child to find words other than their spelling words that have the same pattern. Writing – We are continuing learning to write strong narrative stories with a focus on personal narratives. Students have created Heart Maps of their personal experiences from which they are working on developing stories. Social Studies – Our focus in our map skills study is now on physical features of the United States including locating and labeling the Rocky and Appalachian Mountains, the Mississippi, Ohio, Hudson, Rio Grande, Colorado, and St. Lawrence Rivers. We will begin our Native American study by using our map skills to locate the regions where different Native American tribes lived. Our school-wide expectations include:
