Reading – This week we will review our reading standards on finding text evidence to support comprehension, point of view of the narrator and reader, identifying character traits, and how these standards are supported in the read-aloud "Because of Winn Dixie." Students will take their first reading assessment on Friday. Items on the test include questions from the read-aloud Because of Winn-Dixie, character traits, and how the reader’s point of view may be similar or different from that of the narrator. Grammar – Our focus this week is on concrete and abstract nouns. Concrete nouns name things that we can touch, taste, feel, smell, or hear. Abstract nouns name feelings and thoughts. Spelling – This week we will focus on the words from spelling sort 9. There will be a spelling quiz on Friday over 20 of the words from sorts 7, 8, and 9. When studying spelling words with your child, please focus on the vowel patterns that are emphasized and help your child to find words other than their spelling words that have the same pattern. Writing – We are continuing to write personal narratives. Students are learning to write a strong hook to introduce the story, use transition words, adding details and dialogue to the story, and writing a conclusion. Social Studies – We have started our unit on Native Americans. We will be learning how the environments of the regions of North America impacted the choices made by Native Americans regarding food, clothing, and shelter. We will be studying the Inuit of the Arctic region, the Kwakiutl of the Northwest region, the Nez Perce of the Plateau region, the Hopi of the Southwest region, the Pawnee of the Plains region, and the Seminole of the Southeastern region.
